There are millions of Americans who receive Social Security benefits. In general, SSI, retirement or SSDI payments are always on time. However, there might be exceptions.
SSDI is only for workers with a qualifying disability as long as they have paid enough payroll taxes to the Social Security Administration. Some newly qualified beneficiaries may think their payment is late.
Do not worry because it is normal to get your payment later than you expect it if you have just gotten the approval. Remember that there is a five-month wait period.
What does it mean that SSDI beneficiaries have a five-month waiting period?
This basically means that the payment of your SSDI benefits will not start before the 6th complete month of your disability. By now, you must be wondering when the disability benefits waiting period starts.
Social Security claims that the SSDI waiting period starts the 1st complete month after SSA believes your disability started. Therefore, it is of vital importance that you know that it will take a few months before you can get payments.
Some disabilities do not have a waiting period. In this way, you can receive Social Security Disability Insurance payments much faster. For example, if you suffer from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS, and you get the approval after July 23, 2020.
If you do not qualify for SSDI because you have worked for fewer than ten years, you may want to file for Supplemental Security Income. SSI can provide you with checks of up to $914 in 2023.
What can I do if my SSDI check has not arrived on the payday?
Sometimes there can be a problem and your payment may not arrive on time. Generally, the Social Security Administration sends payments on business days only.
For that reason, you will never get your SSDI money on a holiday or on the weekend. The previous business day will be the payday instead. Before calling the Social Security office, make sure you contact your bank first.
It will be them the ones who may know if they have received your check or not, but they may have trouble processing the payment. It can take up to three mailing days to get a check. If that waiting period is over and your bank does not know anything about your money.
Call Social Security to find out where your SSDI payment is. The upcoming dates are November 8, 15, and 22. The paydays are on the same date as those checks for retirees. SSI payments will be ready on December 1, since the November check arrived on the first day of the month.
