PCGS graded this $100 bill and it has been designated as Choice Fine-15 Details. Needless to say, the Montgomery banknote is outstanding. This one dates back to May 15, 1861, so it is about 163 years old.
Why are these $100 bills historically relevant?
As a matter of fact, they are historically significant because they were issued during the Confederacy. Apart from its documented importance in American history, it has a beautiful design of “America”.
“America” (Minerva or Columbia) is standing tall and the background has a train and passengers too. The numerals are also elegantly designed and they are big in size. According to Stack’s Bowers, there were approximately 1,600 $100 Montgomery notes issued.
Little more than 150 of these banknotes are known. For example, PMG has graded about 45 of them. No doubt, uncirculated bills and well-preserved ones will be the most expensive specimens.

The Professional Coin Grading Services claims that the price it reached at the most recent auction was $4,440. What is more, this marvel was printed and engraced by the National Bank Note Company in New York.
Pay close attention to the penned signatures at the bottom of the $100 note which are neatly presented. Another feature to highlight from this note is the fact that the paper is bright.
This characteristic helps accentuate the details of the design. Do not forget that the place of issue was Montgomery. Richmond became the capital of the Confederate States of America later on, so this makes the bill even more valuable. Many collectors regarded it as the most appealing banknote of this type.
