Sometimes the smallest denomination coins are overlooked and people may not be aware of the fact that they are extremely valuable. Here’s one example: the 1864 2 Cent Small Motto, FS-401, MS66 Red PCGS.
This coin was sold at an auction back on August 16, 2018 and it reached a staggering price. It was worth $78,000.00 claims Professional Coin Grading Services on their website.
When was this 2-cent coin authorized?
Thanks to a new legislation from April 1864, this 2-cent specimen was issued. Its design was left to James Pollock, the Mint Director. Of course, it got the necessary approval of the Treasury Secretary of the time too.
By now, you must be wondering why this 2-cent coin is so valuable. Undoubtedly, it is very well preserved. One of the most important things related to this specimen is the fact that the motto “In GOD WE TRUST” was first used on it.
So, this motto first debuted on United States coinage and it was through this 2 cent piece. In fact, this piece became popular and convenient for commerce back then. No doubt it had a perfect weight (6.22 grams) and size (diameter: 23.00 millimeters). Besides, the motto was highly appreciated as well.
2 different types of the 2-cent pieces
This 2-cent piece was made of copper (95%) and tin and zinc (5%), but this is not the difference between them. PCGS claims that there were 2 versions. Apparently, the Philadelphia Mint made one with a Large Motto and another one with a Small Motto.
So, the size of the letters of the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” was not the same in both versions. In fact, the original was had a Small Motto, which was later replaced by a Large Motto.
Therefore, it became the model for the remaining years of the two-cent type. As a matter of fact, the Large Motto is the more common of the two. Time to check if you have one in your possession!
