Some 66-year-olds may receive a payment worth $4,018 in January 2025. The Social Security Administration has updated the maximum amounts at Full Retirement Age (FRA) and some retired workers will receive such a larger check next year.
This new maximum amount is due to the cost-of-living adjustment or COLA. Even if the 2025 COLA increase was just 2.5%, these maximum amounts at FRA have increased more.
Who will receive a Social Security check of $4,018 in January 2025 at 66?
For your information, this large check will only be for American workers who were high earners for a lot more than 3 decades and meet other essential requirements.
So, this huge check will not be for Americans with average or low wages for many years. Here are all the requirements the Social Security Administration has established to get $4,018 in 2025:
- filing at Full Retirement Age in 2025 (66 years and 10 months)
- getting approval from Social Security
- having worked for a minimum of thirty-five years
- having earned the taxable maximum for at least 35 years too
- do not break SSA rules
- have jobs covered by SSA

The 2025 payment schedule for retirees aged 66 or not states that the new updated amounts will be sent from January 3, 2024. To get money on January 3 you must have started receiving retirement benefits before May 1997.
Another possibility to get money on January 3 is to be receiving SSI benefits. But this benefit for low-income recipients will prevent you from getting a large payment.
The other paydays in January will be January 8, 15 or 22. To get money on these dates you must have been born from 1-10 (Jan. 8), 11-20 (Jan. 15), or 21-31 (Jan. 22). Bear in mind that delaying filing until you are 70 can boost your monthly payments by about 24%.
In 2025, the maximum benefit payment for 70-year-olds is worth $5,108, up from $4,873 after the 2025 COLA increase SSA announced on October 10, 2024.
