Exciting news for Californians aged 70 and above: the DMV has announced that these seasoned drivers will no longer be required to take the written driver test.

When has this change for 70-year-olds and older seniors in California begun?

Starting October 1, drivers aged 70 and older with licenses expiring in 2024 and beyond will not have to undertake the written knowledge test. This change is part of a new policy introduced by the DMV, emphasizing that it is not a legal requirement.

The DMV’s initiative aims to make office visits more efficient. According to DMV Director Steve Gordon, “If thousands fewer people need to visit the DMV, or can spend less time in an office, the people who need to take care of their business in one of our offices can be better served.”

It’s important to note that drivers with a history of poor driving records will still be required to take the written test.

For those drivers aged 70 and older, an office visit is still necessary to complete a vision exam and to have an updated photo taken when renewing their license.
