California's Bold Move Against Child Hunger

Governor Gavin Newsom has just announced an exciting new initiative aimed at tackling food insecurity among children in California. The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) is rolling out SUN Bucks, a federal food program designed to ensure that children from low-income families receive adequate nutrition during the summer months.

The SUN Bucks program is the brainchild of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, which was passed by Congress in December 2022. This program aims to fill the nutritional gap that many children face when school is out for the summer.

School breakfast and lunch programs

For many children who depend on school breakfast and lunch programs, summer break can be a stressful and challenging time. Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted this concern, stating, “For kids who rely on school breakfast and lunch programs, summer break can be a stressful and challenging time.”

This initiative comes at a critical time, as 14 Republican-led states have declined to fund similar programs, despite their stated support for family welfare. The launch of SUN Bucks underscores California’s commitment to ensuring that no child goes hungry, regardless of political challenges.

The benefits of the SUN Bucks program extend beyond just providing food. Adequate nutrition is essential for the overall well-being and development of children. By addressing food insecurity, the program aims to:

With the launch of SUN Bucks, California is taking a bold step in addressing food insecurity among its most vulnerable residents. This initiative not only supports children’s nutritional needs but also reinforces the state’s commitment to family welfare and well-being.

Building on our ongoing efforts to support healthy food access for children year-round, I’m proud that California is partnering with the Biden-Harris Administration to provide SUN Bucks for our families so that no child faces hunger during the summer months.

Introducing SUN Bucks

The SUN Bucks program is designed to ensure that children have reliable access to nutritious meals during the summer break when schools are typically closed. Each child will receive a total of $120, which is equivalent to $40 per month over the three-month summer period. This financial support aims to significantly reduce food insecurity among children.

Eligibility and Enrollment

Children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through a school meal application or an alternative income form will be automatically enrolled in the SUN Bucks program. Additionally, those who are enrolled in CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal will also be eligible. This automatic enrollment ensures that families do not miss out on this essential support.

California Leading the Way

California stands out as one of the first states to implement this innovative food assistance program, swiftly providing financial support to families in need. By partnering with the Biden-Harris Administration, California is taking proactive steps towards eradicating child hunger during the summer months.

With these efforts, California continues to set a precedent for other states to follow, ensuring that no child goes hungry, regardless of the season.
