SSI and retirement benefits are becoming more important than ever in the United States. More than 71 million beneficiaries rely on Social Security.

To get retirement benefits, you must have worked for a minimum of ten years. The jobs you have must be covered by Social Security though.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO GET SSI WHILE ON RETIREMENT BENEFITS?
First of all, you must have little or no resources. Secondly, you must have a low income. If your benefit as a retiree is not low, you will not qualify.
If you have both little resources and low income, you can qualify as long as you meet just one of the following three requirements.
- You are at least 65 years old.
- You have a disability.
- You are blind

HOW MUCH CAN I GET FROM SSI?
The amount of your monthly payment will depend on your personal situation. However, it is possible to see average payments by age. Of course, you cannot have a large retirement check to get SSI.
But average benefits ($1,909) are higher than SSI average payments (697). If you are 65 years old or older, the average SSI payment is worth about $574.46. This is what Social Security stated on the last monthly statistical snapshot.
Anyway, if you qualify, you will receive more money regardless of the amount of your monthly SSI payment. If you need cash to buy food, you can also apply for Food Stamps (SNAP benefits).
