The Social Security Administration offers the possibility to apply for many different benefits. It is more than likely that you have heard about retirement benefits, but what about SSI?

SSI stands for the Supplemental Security Income and there are 4 different groups of people who may be eligible. Social Security said that to qualify you must have a low income and resources. That basically means you have little or no money.

What is more, you may be eligible for SSI if you are at least 65 years old too. Another possibility is to be blind and meet the income limits. If you have a disability, you may also be eligible. Some children may also cash SSI checks from Social Security.

How can I apply for SSI to get money from Social Security?

As you can apply for yourself or for someone else, make sure you gather all the information the Administration will ask for. Of course, you will need your full name, or someone else’s if you file for them.

The Social Security number and the date of birth will be necessary too. So that the Administration can send you letters or notices, you will also need your mailing address.

A phone number will be essential so Social Security can call you to inform you about something during the application process. Although an email is optional, it is not a bad idea to provide them with one you often use.

Those people who are helping someone will also need to identify themselves so that SSA can contact you. Do not worry because they will just need your name and phone number.

Where can I send Social Security this personal information?

All you will have to do is to visit the SSA website to apply. Choose the option adult or child applicant, then select Supplemental Security Income for Age 65 or for Disability.

The Disability section includes blind people or those who have any other qualifying disability. Sometimes it is possible to apply for Social Security retirement or SSDI at the same time.
