SSDI, disability benefits are only for those Americans who have a qualifying disability. Apart from having a disability that prevents you from working for over a year, you must have worked before for a number of years.
The work you did must have been covered by Social Security. Those citizens who have not worked and paid enough taxes can never receive SSDI. In general, you need 40 work credits to get Social Security benefits.
That is about ten years of work. However, this is not the case if your disability starts in your 20s. SSA allows younger SSDI applicants to qualify with a lower number of work credits. Therefore, they could have fewer years of work than seniors.
SSDI PAYMENT ARRIVING ON JANUARY 24
Disability benefits are due on January 24 for some eligible beneficiaries. This could be your payday if you meet the two requirements or conditions that the Social Security Administration has established.
The first condition is to be on Social Security Disability benefits from May 1997 onward. However, if you began collecting these disability payments before that date, you will not receive them until February 2.
The second requirement to get SSDI on January 24 is to have your birthday on one of the following days. For example, if your birth date is from the 21st to the 31st, you will cash benefits on January 24.
This will be the last opportunity to collect a check from Social Security in January. The next payment will be for Supplemental Security Income recipients. It will be due on February 1, 2024.
SSDI AMOUNTS FOR JANUARY 2024
There is not a single amount for Social Security Disability Insurance. This is because the age people file is not always the same. The earlier you file the lower your payment will be.
What is more, some people on SSDI have had higher payments than others. So the more taxes you paid, the higher your disability benefits are. Nevertheless, there are maximum amounts.
The largest SSDI check is $3,822 in 2024. It was $3,627 in 2023, so it has increased a lot after the COLA increase. The largest check is just for a few Americans, so let’s have a look at average payments.
As a matter of fact, the Social Security Administration has stated that SSDI payments are about $1,537 on average in 2024. Disability benefits were $48 lower in December 2023, so beneficiaries can enjoy receiving more money in 2024.
