The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced that a new disability benefits payment will be sent out today to all beneficiaries of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program. To be eligible for this check, you must have claimed benefits after May 1997, been born between the 1st and the 10th of the month, and meet SSDI requirements.
These requirements include proving that you have a disability that prevents you from working or performing substantial gainful activity (SGA) and having contributed to Social Security before becoming disabled. Beneficiaries will receive an average of $1,537, which already includes a 3.2% increase due to the cost of living adjustment (COLA) announced annually.
New scheduled disability benefits payments
The SSA has scheduled a new disability benefits payment to be sent in one day. To be eligible, beneficiaries must demonstrate that they have a disability or blindness that limits their ability to work for at least a year or poses a risk to their life. Besides being unable to perform substantial gainful activity, applicants must have worked at least five of the last ten years and paid Social Security taxes.
However, there are exceptions, such as not being required to work before the age of 24. If all requirements are met, the SSA will determine if you are eligible for monthly benefits and the amount of the SSDI check you will receive.
Disability benefits requirements and exceptions
To qualify for disability benefits, beneficiaries must first prove that they are disabled or blind, with a disability that limits their ability to work for at least a year or puts them at risk of death. In addition to being unable to perform substantial gainful activity, applicants must have worked at least five of the last ten years and paid Social Security taxes.
However, there are exceptions, such as not being required to work before the age of 24. If all requirements are met, the SSA will determine if you are eligible for monthly benefits and the amount of the SSDI check you will receive.
Disability benefits amounts
On average, disabled individuals can expect to receive a monthly check of $1,537, although this amount can vary depending on the type of disability and the contributions made during their working life.
For example, those who qualify and are blind could receive up to $2,590 per month, while those who contributed based on maximum taxable earnings before becoming disabled could receive up to $3,822 per month. Although there are different payment amounts, it is important to speak with a financial advisor or an SSA expert, as applying for disability benefits can be one of the most challenging processes the federal agency has.
August disability benefits payment schedule
The Social Security Administration must deliver monthly benefits to over 71 million Americans across four different programs: retirement, survivor, disability, and SSI. To ensure that all beneficiaries receive their benefits on time, they have designed an annual payment schedule. According to this schedule, all beneficiaries will receive payments throughout the month based on the program they qualify for, the date they claimed benefits, and, in some cases, the day they were born.
SSI beneficiaries
For SSI beneficiaries, the Social Security payment is scheduled for the first day of the month unless it falls on a holiday or weekend. In August, this payment will be made on the 1st.
These beneficiaries receive four rounds of payments depending on the day they claimed benefits and the day they were born:
- August 3: For those who claimed their benefits before May 1997, regardless of age.
- August 14: For those who claimed their benefits after May 1997 and were born between the 1st and the 10th.
- August 21: For those who claimed their benefits after May 1997 and were born between the 11th and the 20th.
- August 28: For those who claimed their benefits after May 1997 and were born between the 21st and the 31st.
