Nowadays, there are two important disability benefits in the United States. The one that could provide you with larger benefits is Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI.
On some occasions, many workers do not qualify for SSDI. Therefore, they usually apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSI payments mean getting lower disability benefits.
Some SSDI beneficiaries receive both disability benefits because they have a very low income. In this way, Social Security helps them out. Otherwise, they would have to face food insecurity among other difficulties.
WHEN WILL DISABILITY BENEFITS ARRIVE THIS WEEK?
If you just qualify for SSI, you will receive your payment on February 1, 2024. Regardless of your age, disability or birthdate, you check will be in your bank account on the first day of the month.
Do not worry if your payment is delayed. Sometimes banks or financial institutions may take longer to process payments for different reasons.
Contact your bank if you think it is delayed, but wait for 3 mailing days before you call Social Security. The next disability benefits will be due on February 2. So, eligible recipients will get their SSDI check on the second.
To get SSDI on Feb. 2 you must have received Social Security before May 1997. If not, you can only receive it if you qualify for both, SSDI and SSI payments.
SSDI AND SSI AMOUNTS FOR FEBRUARY 1 & 2
The maximum amounts for the SSDI payments in 2024 are $3,822. However, very few workers are able to achieve it.
It is so challenging because they must have earned the taxable maximum for 35 years. Early filers will not get this SSDI amount either because they will get a reduction in their benefits.
So, filing late is the only possibility to get the largest amount. SSI offers the lowest disability benefits amounts. Married couples could get up to $1,455, singles up to $943 and essential persons $478.
Disability benefits also have average payments and they may be more realistic. For SSDI the average check is $1,537 and SSI average payments are worth $674 in 2024. Apply for both of them if you have a disability that prevents you from working so you can get money every month.
