Citizens with a disability living in the United States have access to a monthly SSDI payment. There are also other checks they can apply for in order to live as comfortably as possible.
There are two main payments that these citizens can apply for. Also, these two main payments can be combined, although it is true that not all Americans in all contexts can have both payments on a regular basis.
As for the SSDI payment this can be claimed by having a disability and little else. There is no requirement tied to the type of income we have. On the other hand, the second check is Supplemental Security Income or SSI and it does have requirements that have to do with monthly income.
Although it is true that we can apply for both checks at the same time, the truth is that if we have a large SSDI payment we will not be able to access SSI. Do you have any accepted disability benefits?
Disability Benefits that an individual can apply for: SSDI and SSI
As we have already discussed, there are usually two disability benefits for people with disabilities. In addition to these two benefits there are some more specific benefits that states might send, either a stimulus check or SNAP. But if we are talking about monthly benefits as such, there are these two mainly.
Let’s look at requirements and maximum checks for each:
- SSDI. Also called Disability Benefit. This benefit has a maximum check of $3,627 per month. The amount depends on the citizen’s record, as well as the length of disability and other variables. It is necessary to have worked a minimum number of years if the disability is occupational. In the case of a birth disability, the conditions are different.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The SSI benefit has two main requirements. The first of these requirements is having a disability or being over age 65. In addition to that, the other requirement is to have a low source of income as well as low resources. The maximum check for this SSDI-compatible benefit is $914 per month.
Remember that both benefits are compatible, but not in case we have the maximum SSDI. In that case, it will be impossible to apply for another extra benefit. In order to check if we can apply for these checks we can use the Best Tool. This free Social Security application will let us see in minutes if we are eligible for these benefits.
