If you receive food assistance through the federal SNAP program and have had your funds stolen or skimmed, it’s crucial to act quickly as the deadline to get reimbursed is approaching.
Deadline for SNAP Reimbursement After Theft or Skimming Approaching Fast
Anyone who has experienced electronic theft or skimming of their benefits will no longer be eligible for federal reimbursement after September 30. This is due to the expiration of federal assistance for reimbursement at that time.
In late 2022, Congress passed a law aimed at protecting and replacing SNAP benefits stolen through card skimming, cloning, and other fraudulent methods. This legislation mandates all states to replace benefits stolen between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2024.
With the end date fast approaching, the New Mexico Health Care Authority’s Income Support Division will no longer receive federal funding to help replace stolen benefits.
The HCA strongly encourages individuals to:
If you need to submit a benefit replacement request, it must be done within 30 days of discovering the theft. Don’t wait—ensure your SNAP benefits are protected and act now to secure any eligible reimbursement.
- Check their account balance regularly
- Review past purchases
- File any claims before the deadline
