General Motors (GM) is making significant changes at its Fairfax, Kansas assembly plant, impacting nearly 2,000 employees. This shift comes as the company prepares to phase out a once-popular Chevrolet model.
Last month, GM filed a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notice, indicating plans to lay off 1,695 employees from the Fairfax facility, according to state documents.
Consequences of the discontinuation of this iconic vehicle
The layoffs are partly due to the end of production for the iconic Chevy Malibu, as reported by The Drive. The Malibu has been a staple in GM’s lineup, but its production will cease this November.
As Malibu production winds down, the Fairfax Assembly Plant will undergo a significant transformation. According to CNN, the facility will be reconfigured to manufacture the new generation of the Chevrolet Bolt EV.
GM’s mainstream Chevy brand in the United States will focus solely on trucks, SUVs, and the Corvette with the discontinuation of the Malibu.

In addition to the Malibu, General Motors also revealed plans to discontinue the Camaro. This decision is part of the automaker’s strategic shift towards a greater focus on electric vehicles (EVs).
“This focus on EVs means we have to say goodbye to popular vehicles like the Chevy Malibu,” stated a Chevy representative in a recent release.
