Since there are millions of gold coins all over the world, there can be grading mistakes if they are overlooked by the wrong person. That is why it is of vital importance to hire the services of experts like PCGS in the United States.
Here comes the story of a very rare coin from the 17th century. As a matter of fact, it is stamped with the profile of Jing Charles I. Believe it or not, it was left in the back of a drawer because it was though to be fake.
400-year-old gold coin
As you can see, it is a really old specimen, and not many numismatic collectors have one in their possession. The face value is just 20 shillings according to the British news service SWNS.
However, when they realized it was an original specimen, it was valued between $1,942 and $3,887. Apparently, this gold piece was left over from travels abroad which was found in a collection of old currency.
Once more, this gold piece was inherited. The owner of the specimen found it at her aunt’s house after her passing. Can you imagine finding such a valuable coin at the back of the dressing table drawer?
The gold coin remained unnoticed at first
Actually, it was placed in a box with other 20th-century coins. Bear in mind the historical importance of this gold piece because it depicts a King of England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1625 through 1649.
Robin Fletcher, an antiques appraiser for an auction house, believed it was fake because he was told so. However, he checked it when he had it in his office. It would have been great to see the face of the owner after learning it was not fake but really valuable instead.
No doubt numismatics enthusiasts have learned from this story how important it is to make sure any pieces they have should not be overlooked. PCGS reports a similar coin auction record in 2020. The final sale price was a whopping $4,320.00.
