After my disability started, I began to look for benefits that could help me out. Not being able to work from one day to the next is not something easy.
However, I decided to move on. I read on the Social Security’s website that I should apply for benefits as soon as my disability started.
I found that the Social Security Administration offers the possibility to file for two different kinds of benefits. The first thing I did was to create a my Social Security account to read my annual Statement.
CHECK YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY STATEMENT TO SEE BENEFITS ELIGIBILITY
As soon as I realized that my estimated disability benefits were going to be too low, I broke down. Though it was not for long, because I found out that I could also get SSI and SNAP.
I quickly applied for Social Security Disability Insurance. That would provide me with about $900 per month. But I had to wait for at least 5 months, which is the waiting period.
A friend of mind did not have to wait for the waiting period since she had ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). She qualified for expedited benefits.
THIS IS HOW I FILED FOR SSDI
All I had to do was visit https://www.ssa.gov/apply?benefits=disability&age=adult. Then I clicked on “start application”.
I must admit I had already prepared all the medical certificates, employer and work details, bank account numbers, SSN, and other essential information.
Then, I ticked the box to accept the terms and conditions. After that, I pressed “next” and read what I would need. Afterward, I simply clicked on “start a new application”.
I had to say if I was applying for myself or if I was helping someone. Finally, I had to log in to my Social Security to complete the application. My friend called 1-800-772-1213 instead, which was easier for her.
