IRS: How to prepare for an appointment at TACs

Make sure you know how the IRS TACs can help you

The IRS can help millions of taxpayers every year but it is really important that Americans are aware of the different tools and resources available. A recent post on the Internal Revenue Service profile on X warned taxpayers that TACs are not tacos.

But what are TACs then? The IRS claims that they are Tax Assistance Centers across the United States. If this does not help either because you are new to the tax world, let’s explain it in depth.

IRS: What are TACs?

These are IRS centers where taxpayers can solve a tax issue when they are unable to sort them out online. Therefore, if you do not know how to deal with a tax-related issue, you’d better find where the closest TAC is.

For your information, you can call the IRS to make an appointment once you have found a Tax Center which is close to you. The office locator will provide you with the phone number.

For example, if you are looking for an IRS TAC in New York (Downtown), the phone number you must call to make an appointment is (844) 545-5640. In-person help is also available. Visit the official website to find the closest TAC: https://apps.irs.gov/app/office-locator/.

IRS suggests doing this to get ready

Once you have made an appointment, you can make sure you have done everything to prepare for it. Try to make this appointment ahead of time in order to avoid missing any filing deadline.

Do not forget to take with you any tax documents you may have related to the issue. A valid photo ID will be essential to be able to get help at TACs. Take with you your Social Security Number or ITIN.

Even if most taxpayers would not do that, make sure you do not bring with you any cameras, food or drinks and so on. If you are ill, reschedule your appointment. Silence your cell phone to avoid interruptions during your appointment.
