Exciting news for SNAP recipients! A new bonus incentive plan has been launched in two states, offering up to $60 in extra benefits every month. This initiative aims to make healthy eating more accessible and affordable for those who need it most.
The USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) has allocated a substantial $25 million in funding to support the implementation of Electronic Healthy Incentives Projects (eHIP). This program provides additional Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to recipients who buy fruits and vegetables at participating retailers.
SNAP is designed to offer monthly financial assistance to low-income households across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories. The funds are distributed via electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards, which can be used at participating stores and are reloaded monthly.
With this new initiative, SNAP recipients in the selected states can enjoy even more support in their journey toward healthier eating habits.
Colorado Joins Washington in SNAP Reimbursement Program
Colorado has become the second state to utilize grant funding from the USDA for this progressive plan. Washington was the pioneer, implementing the project earlier, and Louisiana is set to follow soon.
How the Reimbursement Works
Eligible recipients in Colorado can receive up to $20 per transaction, with a maximum of $60 per month reimbursed to their accounts. This initiative aims to “make it easier for SNAP households to access the healthy foods necessary for lifelong health and well-being,” as stated by the USDA. The same rules apply in Washington, where the program was launched in June 2023.
Impact on Monthly Benefits
According to KFF Health, the average monthly SNAP benefit issued in Colorado is $214. With the added reimbursements, recipients could see their benefits increase to $274, marking a significant 28 percent boost in their monthly assistance.
Where to Use the Reimbursements
In Colorado, this program is being introduced at various retailers and farmers’ markets, making it more convenient for SNAP households to purchase healthy foods.

Are you looking to stretch your EBT benefits while enjoying fresh, healthy produce? Great news! You don’t need to sign up for anything special. Just head to one of the participating retailers, shop for fruits and vegetables, and the reimbursement will automatically be added to your EBT card.
Where to Shop
Most of these retailers are market stalls and farm stands, which might not operate every day. However, they are conveniently located throughout the busiest areas of the state, such as Denver, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins.
Eligible Foods
The list of eligible foods is extensive and includes:
- All types of fruits and vegetables
- Frozen fruits and vegetables, provided they don’t contain added salt, sugar, or fat
- Dried fruits and vegetables (without added salt, sugar, or fat) available at farmers markets
- Dried beans
Bonus Tip: When shopping at farmers’ markets, you can even receive a bonus for purchasing if your State has the Double Up Food Bucks program, ensuring you get the most out of your benefits. Check it out at: https://doubleupamerica.org/
