I don’t have enough work credits to apply for SSDI (disability benefits), what can I do?

Not having enough work credits can prevent you from receiving SSDI disability benefits, but are there any alternatives in 2023 and 2024?

SSDI and eligibility, not all workers can receive this Social Security payment

There are several things you can do if you do not qualify for SSDI. Keep in mind that Social Security is just for those Americans who have worked for a minimum number of years.

To be more accurate, you will need at least 40 credit credits to get Social Security. That is about ten years of work. However, this rule would prevent younger people with a disability from receiving SSDI benefits from the Administration.

That is why there is a lower number of credits if you have not reached the age to retire, that is, 62 years old. For instance, if you are 60, you just need to have worked for 9.5 years. The thing is some people may not have worked enough because of their studies, their children’s upbringing, or their health.

What can I do if I do not qualify for SSDI?

American workers who have not worked enough to receive checks of up to $3,627 from Social Security can apply for SSI. SSI is the Supplemental Security Income and you can qualify if you meet two requirements.

SSDI beneficiaries must have earned enough work credits, or they cannot get disability benefits from Social Security

The first condition is to have a low income and little money in your bank account. Therefore, if you have other earnings you may not qualify for Supplemental Security Income.

Anyway, it is always best to apply and see if you are eligible or not. Make sure you gather all the necessary information and documents to prove you qualify. If you and your spouse qualify you can get more up to $1,371.

If you file individually, you may just get up to $914. These amounts are about to increase due to the 2024 COLA. Thus, you may get up to $943 (single), $1,415 (couples), or up to $472 (essential persons).

Can I get Social Security Disability Insurance and SSI at the same time?

If you manage to earn enough work credits and qualify for SSDI due to your disability, you can also receive SSI. SSI is a supplement for those on disability or retirement benefits.

What is more, you can also apply for SNAP benefits, the former Food Stamps program. This can give you a check to buy food worth $973 if you are four in your family. People on SSDI may also receive SNAP checks.

If you are a woman with kids or you are pregnant, you may also be eligible for WIC. Actually, it is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.

If your situation is extreme and you have no money for food, you can always contact USDA. For example, they have the Emergency Food Assistance Program. Make sure you pay enough payroll taxes to Social Security to be eligible for future payments.
