The Social Security Administration has informed of the next Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments in December. Remember that there is usually a single payment during the same month.
That means that you will collect 12 SSI payments in one year. Therefore, there will not be any extra checks or any bonus. However, there are some occasions when Social Security sends two checks in one month.
The reason why Social Security may send two SSI checks per month is not clear for some new beneficiaries. But actually, it is very simple. Social Security never sends payments on the weekend or on a holiday. What SSA does instead is to send the money in advance. So, there will be some paydays before the due date.
SSI payments in December: dates
In general, most SSI payments are at the beginning of the month. Therefore, the first Supplemental Security Income payment will be on December 1, 2023. Remember that this payment is only for those who have applied and got approval from the Administration.
In fact, this should be the last Supplemental Security Income payment during this month. But there will be another payment by the end of the month. The January payment was due on January 1, 2024.
Do not forget that January 1 is New Year. As New Year is a holiday, the Social Security Administration had to reschedule that payment. Therefore, beneficiaries will have two payments in December.
Bear in mind that when paydays are on a holiday, SSA sends it on the previous business day. In this case, the second SSI payment will be on December 29. By now, you must be wondering about the amounts of these payments and if they will be the same.
SSI December payments: amounts
One important thing SSI beneficiaries need to take into account is that the amount of your checks will depend on your situation. Therefore, not all recipients will cash the same amount of money.
What is the same is the maximum amounts, but not all beneficiaries are eligible for them and may get reductions. For instance, if you get the largest check available on December 1, you can receive up to $914. Married couples can collect up to $1,371 if eligible. Essential persons up to $458.
Nevertheless, if you also cash the SSI payment on December 29, you will receive more money. There will be higher amounts because of the 2024 COLA increase the Social Security Administration announced.
So, SSI beneficiaries will get a 3.2% extra on December 29. For example, if you and your spouse get $1,000, you will receive $1,032. If you just receive $500, your new check will be $516. The largest amounts will be $943, $1,415 and $472 for individuals, couples, and essential persons that are eligible.
