Bear in mind that if you have a disability, you may be eligible for SSDI or/and SSI. However, the Social Security Administration may take much longer to make a decision than for other benefits.
Unless you have a disability that qualifies for the Compassionate Allowances Program and you get expedited SSDI or SSI benefits. So, it is advisable to apply for these disability benefits as soon as your disability prevents you from working because it may take more than 6 months.
SSDI and SSI payments in September
The first thing that comes as a surprise is the fact that the SSI payment for September has been scheduled for August. So, Supplemental Security Income recipients will receive their monthly payment on August 30.
As you can see it is possible to receive 2 payments during the same calendar month, but you will still collect a total of 12 SSI checks or direct deposits per year. The SSDI payments for eligible recipients will be due on:
- payment on September 3: if you are on both Social Security and SSI
- payment on September 3: those who started getting Social Security before May 1997
- payment on September 11: birthday from 1-10*
- payment on September 18: birthday from 11-20*
- payment on September 25: birthday from 21-31*
- *these disability recipients cannot have received benefits before May 1997 and are not on SSI.
- The largest SSDI payment will be $3,822 and $1,415 for married couples on SSI. SSI for individuals can be up to $943.
How to apply for SSI and SSDI
To apply for SSI you must have a qualifying disability, be blind, or be at least 65 years old. However, this will not be enough. In fact, you must have a low income and little to no resources.
Then, you should visit https://www.ssa.gov/apply/ssi and select if you are an adult or you would like to apply for your child. Tick the box for age 65+ or disability or blind. Then, decide if you can also be eligible for SSDI and tick it too. After that, click on learn how to apply and select “Start application”.
