If you are aged 18-52 and you receive SNAP benefits, you should know this. Those who are considered ABAWD (Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents) must meet additional work requirements.
Therefore, if you do not comply with these SNAP work requirements, you will not be able to get for more than 3 months in a 3 year period. For example, if you got them for the first time in January, you may lose them in April if you did not meet all these work requirements.
That is why it is of vital importance to know this. In fact, you must work for at least 80 hours per month as you get SNAP benefits if you are an ABAWD aged 18-52.
WHAT IF I CAN’T FIND A JOB?
It is true that some areas in the United States may lack job opportunities sometimes. Hence, you may also have the chance to take part in a training program for the same number of hours per month, 80.
Sometimes you are only able to work for 40 hours per month, but you can do some work training to supplement it. As long as both tasks reach 80 hours per month.
Things will soon change. It will be from October 1, 2024, when the age will increase to 54. By then, more SNAP beneficiaries will have to meet the additional work requirements.
SNAP WAIVERS FOR THE ABAWD TIME LIMIT
Food Stamp recipients who would like to avoid this ABAWD time limit may achieve it if they get a waiver from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).
Waivers are for several groups of American citizens. For example, you do not have to work for 80 hours to get SNAP for more than 3 months in 3 years if you are pregnant or a Veteran.
A physical or mental disability may also allow you to get a waiver. Americans experiencing homelessness can also make use of this waiver. If you are up to 24 and have been in foster care you may also get a waiver.
