Social Security has only scheduled 4 payment dates in September, here is the reason

Social Security sets 4 payment dates in September

Usually, there are 5 different paydays every month. For your information, the Social Security Administration is in charge of administering the annual payment schedule. Sometimes there can be 6 payments in the same month although this is unfrequent.

This happens when a payment falls on the weekend or a holiday and it needs to be sent on the previous business day, which can actually be the previous month too. This is what has happened to the Supplemental Security Income payment date.

Social Security schedules SSI for August 30, 2024

The reason why the fifth payment is not due in September is simple. September 1, the usual payday for SSI, is Sunday. Therefore, Social Security had to reschedule the Supplemental Security Income payment to the previous business day.

In this case, it will be the last Friday in August. SSA makes these changes to avoid any delays in the arrival of the monthly payments. SSI recipients have a low income so they cannot afford to wait any longer for their money.

What is more, SSA offices are not open on the weekend and banks are closed too. Hence, they would not have enough time to process payments since they are closed. Anyway, all payments will be issued on time and there will be no delays. Still, recipients will receive a total of 12 payments in 2024, one per month.

Social Security payment dates for September

Apart from the SSI payment on the first day of the month, usually, there is a Social Security check or direct deposit due on the third. There are 2 groups of recipients who can get this check.

Retirees or SSDI recipients who got benefits before May 1997 will receive a payment on September 3. Apart from them, those SSDI recipients and retirees who are on SSI at the same time will be eligible for the direct deposit on September 3 as well.

Finally, there will be 3 more rounds of checks for those who are not eligible for the September 3 payment. Social Security will send money to those who also meet the birthday requirement.
