Social Security has announced that there will be change to SSI benefits in 2024

A new change to the rules related to food assistance for SSI will soon take place in the United States. Social Security gives a step forward and will change the way Supplemental Security Income benefit amounts are calculated.

So far, things will remain the same. Therefore, Supplemental Security Income recipients will have to wait until September. Social Security said that the new rule will come into effect on September 30.

SOCIAL SECURITY SAID WILL HAPPEN FROM SEPTEMBER 30

The agency claims that from September 30, 2024, there will no longer be food in ISM calculations for SSI. SSA will not include the food you regularly receive if you are on Supplemental Security Income.

Therefore, over five million SSI recipients will benefit from this measure. Needless to say, this new rule will be really helpful since it can reduce your SSI payments by about 33%.

From September 30, you will not have to worry about informing Social Security of the food you get. Regardless of its precedence, food assistance will not be taken into account to work out your SSI amount.

SOCIAL SECURITY WILL ALSO BENEFIT FROM THIS NEW RULE

Since Social Security workers will not have to review food, they will need less time to process applications. The workload will be lower and the Administration will saving money on administrative tasks.

What is more, the agency will be able to send more accurate SSI amounts. This will mean there will be a lower risk of overpayment. There are four important groups of Americans who will take advantage of this new rule.

Social Security allows seniors aged 65, blind people, and adults and children with a qualifying disability to get SSI. Hence, all of them will no longer see their eligibility or the amount affected for the food assistance. For your information, the average payments are about $699 for all recipients.
