Social Security average payments for SSI, SSDI and retirement benefits in August

The Social Security Administration has announced the new average payments as of July 2024 in August. Therefore, SSDI, SSI, and retirement recipients can compare the amount they receive to the average amounts.

Those who are about to apply for SSDI, SSI, or retirement benefits may get a better idea of what the amount could be like. However, this may not be reliable since your payment amount can be affected by personal factors like work history, filing age, or even earnings and money on hand for SSI.

SSDI and SSI average amounts

The average amount for SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) is $1,538.85. Bear in mind that children or workers with a disability and their spouses can also receive SSDI payments every month if eligible.

A spouse of a worker with a disability can receive $421.34 on average. Their children can get about $491.41 on average. But what about SSI payments? Supplemental Security Income recipients get much lower checks or direct deposits since they may be eligible for other benefits that reduce their payment and it is a supplement.

All SSI recipients get an average payment worth $695 as of July 2024. The average payment has gone down if compared to the June figure which was closer to $700. Depending on your age, you may get a higher or lower average SSI payment.

Retirement benefits, higher than SSDI

On average, retirement benefits tend to be higher than SSDI. This is because a disability can prevent a worker from getting more work credits and a higher payment. That is way many Disability Insurance recipients need to apply for SSI.

A retired worker gets an average payment of about $1,919 as of July 2024. Spouses of retired workers can get $910.42 on average. Their children may also qualify for Social Security and they could receive about 892.39 dollars on average.

Let’s not forget that survivors also have average payments. Children of deceased workers can receive about 1,103.54 on average.
