Retirees have already received the money for their September Social Security payments in their bank accounts. If you have not received your September 25 payment, you can wait up to 3 mailing days before you can contact SSA to report a missing payment.
However, if you qualify for a check in October before the 2025 COLA increase announcement, you can receive your Social Security direct deposit in early October.
First Social Security payment before the 2025 COLA announcement
The Administration will deliver the first checks and direct deposits in October on the third. This money will only be for those retirees who started getting monthly payments from the retirement or Disability Insurance program before May 1997.
Apart from this group of recipients, those who are receiving Social Security and Supplemental Security Income will qualify for the October 3 payment. However, payment amounts may differ between both groups.
Those receiving SSI may have a much lower Social Security check. On average, all retired workers get about $1,920. Some higher earners may get up to $4,873 in any of the 2024 payments from SSA.
Second Social Security payment before the 2025 COLA statement
Retirees may qualify for the October 9 payment. In fact, these direct deposits and check will be due one day before the 2025 COLA increase figure is unveiled.
Bear in mind that the announcement will be made on October 10, but benefits will not increase until after December 31, 2024. December 31 will be when SSI recipients get their new COLA boost.
Nevertheless, SSDI and retirement recipients will have to wait until January 3, 8, 15 or 22. going back to the October 9 payment, you could receive it if you were born from 1-10 and you are not on SSI and did not get benefits before May 1997. Summing up:
