While SSDI is for American workers who have paid Social Security taxes and have a qualifying disability, SSI payments are for low-income Americans who may have a disability, are blind, or are at least 65 years old.

Paydays for SSI and SSDI are not the same although they may very rarely share a payday. The Supplemental Security Income payment usually arrives on the first, like the August 1, 2024 payment. But SSDI could be in your account on the third of the month or the second, third, or fourth Wednesday. Changes may take place if they fall on non-business days.

SSI and SSDI payment amounts

The amount of your disability benefits will depend on your earnings. For example, the lower your earnings are in the present, the higher your SSI payment could be up to $943 for individuals or $1,415 for married couples.

If you had high earnings as a worker, your SSDI benefits will now be higher too. In fact, you can get up to $3,822 in 2024 from Disability Insurance. Bear in mind that this is unlikely. Average payments are just about $1,537.

If you are receiving an average payment for SSI, your payment will be about $697. It will depend on your age group whether you can receive a larger or lower SSI payment. For example, 65-year-olds and older can receive $574 on average.
