Not many Americans can receive the largest Social Security retirement or SSDI payments. Those who receive SSI it is because they have a low income and little to no resources. Therefore, average checks and direct deposits may be much closer to reality than large amounts few can qualify for. For example, as of November 2024, SSI benefits are about $698.35 for all recipients said SSA in December.
If you are under 18 and receiving SSI benefits, you can get about $813.30 on average confirmed Social Security. This is the age group with a larger average payment. The smallest average SSI payment is for seniors aged 65 or older. They get about $575.85 said SSA. This may be because they are also on retirement benefits. This December, the Agency has announced that retired workers get about $1,925.46 on average. The Old-Age and Survivors Insurance payment is about $1,841.35 on average.
While SSA stated that retirement benefits are about $1,876.95 on average. Remember that not only can workers receive Social Security, but children, and spouses, may qualify on the workers’ record too.
Take for example the average payment for spouses of workers, they get about $908.76. Children get a lower average payment of about $894.82. But what about survivor benefits?

If a worker passes away, a family member like a spouse, a child, or a parent may be eligible for monthly payment from Social Security. Here are average amounts for survivors:
- Children of deceased workers: $1,105.12 on average
- Widowed mothers and fathers: $1,286.88 on average
- Nondisabled widow(er)s: $1,786.81 on average
- Disabled widow(er)s: $927.46 on average
- Parents of deceased workers: 1,627.29 on average
SSDI average payments
While the largest SSDI payment is $3,822, a worker receives about $1,542 on average. Spouses of workers with a disability can get about $421.55. If you have children with a disability and qualify, they can get on average about $496.04
