How is my Social Security payment date established?

The Social Security Administration generally makes payments on the second, third and fourth Wednesday of each month, determined by the beneficiary’s date of birth.

If your birthday is between the 1st and 10th of the month, you will get your payment on the second Wednesday of the month.
If your birthday is between the 11th and 20th of the month, payment will be made on the third Wednesday of the month.
If your birthday is between the 21st and 31st of the month, your payment will be sent on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Payments for Social Security beneficiaries are generally made on the first day of each month, with some exceptions as detailed below.

What if I am getting both Social Security and SSI benefits?

If you are getting Social Security benefits before May 1997 or if you are a recipient of both Social Security and SSI, the payment schedule differs. Instead of getting payments on a Wednesday, you will get your Social Security payment on the third day of each month and your SSI payment on the first day of each month.

However, these payment dates change if the first or third day of the month falls on a weekend or holiday. For example, in the current year, with October 1 falling on a Sunday, SSI recipients got their October payments a few days earlier, on September 29, while Social Security recipients got their payments on October 3. This same adjustment will occur with January 2024 payments.

What happens if my payment does not arrive on the scheduled date?

If your payment is not received by the due date, it is recommended that you wait an additional three days before contacting the Social Security Administration. You can then speak to a representative by calling 800-772-1213. The SSA indicates that wait times are shortest Wednesday through Friday and between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on weekdays.
