The Social Security Administration (SSA) has recently issued two important alerts regarding the program.
If you access information about your Social Security benefits through a “my Social Security” account on the SSA website, which is highly recommended, you’ll need to adapt to a new way of logging in.
Social Security alerts
The SSA has announced that anyone who created their account before September 18, 2021, will soon need to access it through either login.gov or ID.me. So, the old method will no longer be available after that date.
These two platforms, known as Credential Service Providers, are widely used by various government online services. They offer additional layers of security and protection while simplifying the sign-in process.
- If you already have an account with either login.gov or ID.me, you’re all set! No need to create a new one.
- If you don’t have an account with either service, you’ll need to create one soon to continue accessing your “my Social Security” account.
- It’s advisable to set up your account with these services as soon as possible to avoid any interruptions in accessing your benefits information.
By transitioning to these new login methods, the SSA aims to enhance the security and user experience for all beneficiaries. The second alert addresses fraudulent information you may have encountered online or in emails.
Therefore, do not trust any emails or text messages you may receive. It is always advisable to visit your local Social Security office and ask before clicking on links that could be harmful.
