Average payments are not the same for all Social Security recipients. For example, retirees usually get more money than SSDI and SSI beneficiaries on average.
As of October 10, 2024, the Social Security Administration announced a 2.5% COLA increase for all benefits (retirement, SSI, SSDI, and so on). This means these Americans will get extra money from January 2025 onward.
SSDI average payment after Social Security’s 2025 COLA
If you are receiving Social Security Disability Insurance, your average payment is about $1,539, as of August 2024. This average disability payment is likely to increase through December.
So, Social Security expects it to be up to $1,542 by December 2024. Then, once the 2025 COLA increase is added, the new average payment for SSDI beneficiaries will be about $1,580 in January 2025.
Average payments are just an idea for recipients and applicants to know what similar amounts could be once they receive them. However, this does not mean that you will get this amount. Some workers with a disability qualify for a lower payment, while others get a lot more. This depends on your work history and earnings.
