SSDI payments will soon be updated. The Social Security Administration (SSA) unveiled the COLA figure for disability recipients in 2025. It was on October 10 when SSA announced that there would be an increase of just 2.5%.
This 2.5% is a little lower than the average COLA in the last ten years, which is 2.6%. However, SSDI recipients will get on average about 38 dollars extra if they qualify for an average payment worth $1,539.
Who will receive $456 extra from SSDI in 12 months?
Those who are receiving a Disability Insurance payment worth $1,539 will get 38 extra dollars per month. In just one year, they will amount a total boost of $456, which will be essential to cope with soaring prices and inflation.
Some Social Security Disability Insurance recipients will get more money if they are eligible for a higher-than-average payment. Nevertheless, some may get even fewer dollars if they have a low payment.
For example, if your SSDI check is just worth 800 dollars, you will receive about $820 after the COLA boost. So, that is about 20 dollars extra. Those who qualify for a monthly payment worth $3,000 could get $3,075 after COLA.
When will SSDI recipients get the 2.5% COLA increase?
The Social Security Administration has confirmed that the first SSDI payment with the COLA boost will take place on January 3, 2025. Therefore, there will be no increases in 2024.
Bear in mind that SSI recipients will get the 2.5% boost on December 31, 2024. However, this is simply because January 1, 2025, will be a Federal Holiday. If you are on SSDI while you are getting SSI, your SSI will be issued first.
Other Social Security Disability Insurance payments with the COLA increase will be delivered to disability recipient’s accounts on January 8, 15 and 22. Those on SSDI who will get money on January 1 will be:
- those on Disability Insurance before May 1997, or
- those who are also receiving Supplemental Security Income payments (SSI benefits)
