Many workers have to face a new disability in their lives. SSDI payments can be a solution to overcome their financial difficulties while they cannot make money from work.
Bear in mind that even if you have earned enough work credits, you may still not be eligible for SSDI benefits. To be eligible you must have a qualifying disability as well. But is there a listing of impairments to check if you are eligible? Actually, there is one listing to check if your disability meets SSA’s strict definition.
SSA’s listing of impairments for SSDI applicants
Thankfully, the Social Security Administration has a full listing of impairments. These impairments prevent any individual from doing any gainful activity. If it is a kid, it is severe enough to cause marked and severe functional limitations.
These impairments tend to be either permanent or result in death. Sometimes the impairment has a specific duration which is stated in the listing. Here is the full list:
- Musculoskeletal Disorders
- Special Senses and Speech
- Respiratory Disorders
- Cardiovascular System
- Digestive Disorders
- Genitourinary Disorders
- Hematological Disorders
- Skin Disorders
- Endocrine Disorders
- Congenital Disorders that Affect Multiple Body Systems
- Neurological Disorders
- Mental Disorders
- Cancer
- Immune System Disorders

Medical evidence to get SSDI
Do not forget that to back your SSDI application you must provide SSA with medical evidence. Undoubtedly, it is the cornerstone of any disability determination.
This medical evidence must show how severe their disability is. Needless to say, SSA may help claimants get medical evidence. Even if SSA can request medical evidence from hospitals, it will be slower.
So it is always advisable to send it once you apply to speed up the process. Bear in mind that the Social Security Administration may take longer than expected to make a decision. Therefore, the sooner you apply, the better.
