Not all Americans with a disability can receive SSDI payments. These disability benefits are similar to retirement benefits because you must have worked and paid taxes to Social Security.
If you did not pay any taxes as you worked, you will not receive Social Security Disability Insurance or retirement benefits. For example, if you file for SSDI at 60, you will need at least 38 work credits or 9.5 years of work.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO GET SSDI PAYMENTS IN MAY 2024?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) claims that there are just 2 main requirements. To get SSDI you must have enough work history. Besides, you must be blind or have a qualifying disability.
In general, you will need to have worked for a minimum of five years of the last 10. Otherwise, you may not qualify for SSDI. However, if you are younger than 24, you may not need to have worked for so long.
Bear in mind that your disability must meet the strict definition given by Social Security. Some disabilities are easier to determine eligibility than others. Therefore, some decisions may be faster than others. If you have worked for 35 years, earned the taxable maximum, and filed late, you could get up to $3,822 in 2024.
CHECK IF YOU CAN GET SSDI BY DOING THIS
If you are not sure if you have worked enough or not to get disability benefits, there is one thing you can do about it. Social Security recommends downloading a Statement. This Statement will tell you if you qualify for SSDI or not.
Bear in mind that SSA usually pays disability benefits if it has prevented you from working for over a year. What is more, there is a 5-month waiting period. So, you may not get SSDI immediately.
On some occasions, there are delays and you may have to wait much longer than expected. To make the process faster, provide Social Security with medical certificates. Check if your disability is in the listing of impairments at https://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/AdultListings.htm. Luckily, people with ALS do not have to wait for 5 months.
