The Social Security Administration does not fund SSI payments. As a matter of fact, they are a Federal program. However, the Agency is in charge of administering applications and scheduling monthly payments.
Those citizens who have a low income and little to no resources need to meet one of these three requirements to qualify for SSI. They must have a qualifying disability, be blind, or be at least 65 years old.
Payment dates for SSI
The SSI payment schedule that the Social Security Administration has unveiled shows that there are 5 payments left in 2024. However, the last one on December 31 will be sent in advance and it is for the month of January.
As January 1 is a federal holiday, Supplemental Security Income payments will have to be sent on the previous business day. Similarly, the payment which was due on September 1 has been scheduled for August 30.
This is because September 1 is Sunday. SSA offices are not open on Sundays. October 1 and November 1 will be the normal paydays for Supplemental Security Income recipients in the USA. Nevertheless, those receiving this payment in December will get it on November 29, 2024.
SSI applications in 2024
Even if you can apply for Supplemental Security Income benefits all year round, it may be easier to qualify for some applicants after this date. This is because Social Security will introduce some changes.
Those changes will help more low-income Americans qualify and some may even receive a larger payment. The date these changes come into effect will be September 30, 2024.
Therefore, it would be best to apply for Supplemental Security Income from that date onward if you are not sure you meet all the requirements. Among the changes SSI applicants can benefit from are:
- Expand Access to the Program by Updating the Definition of a Public Assistance Household
- Expand the Supplemental Security Income Rental Subsidy Policy
- Remove Barriers to Accessing Supplemental Security IncomePayments (ISM)
