SSI is the Supplemental Security Income benefit payment. It is a Federal program for American citizens who have a low income, little resources, and meet one of the three key conditions.

What are the requirements to get SSI payments?
If you have a low income, you should check the other requirements to get Supplemental Security Income in the United States. Social Security claims that these payments are for those:
- have qualifying disability
- or are 65 years old
- or are blind
Therefore, if you find it difficult to make ends meet because you have little or no money, and meet one of the following conditions, you’d better apply to find out if you are eligible.
Keep in mind that the Supplemental Security Income is also for children, so it is not just for adults. Only for U.S. citizens or national. Some non-citizens may qualify if they belong to an alien classification granted by DHS (Department of Homeland Security).
Are there residency requirements?
Yes, there are. Applicants must be residents of one of the 50 States, the Northern Mariana Islands and the District of Columbia. What is more, you cannot be absent from the USA for a full calendar month.
That is, you are not outside of the USA for 30 consecutive days or more. Those citizens who are confined in a hospital or prison cannot be eligible for Supplemental Security Income payments.
Another issue is that Social Security cannot pay SSI unless you file. Once you file, you give SSA permission to check the money you have in your financial institution.
