Thousands to get extra Social Security payment in December

This will be the last time in 2023 that some beneficiaries collect 2 monthly payments in December

Social Security and the extra payment in December

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has just confirmed the upcoming payments in December. As a matter of fact, there will be five different paydays, but there will be six payments. That means that there will 2 checks on the same day.

The first payment that Social Security has scheduled is Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This can be for those Americans who do not qualify for retirement or SSDI benefits. But it could also be for those who get a low check from the Administration.

Remember that Social Security will only send 12 checks per year. Therefore, there will be no extra or bonus payment. However, if you have a look at the December payment schedule, there will be another check for SSI on December 29.

Why will Social Security send 2 checks to SSI beneficiaries?

The reason why the Administration will send one SSI payment on December 29 is because it is an advanced payment. Actually, it is just the January payment. Bear in mind that SSA never sends payments on a holiday.

What is more, there are never Social Security checks on the weekend. That explains the December 29 payment to SSI beneficiaries. New Year is a holiday, so SSA has rescheduled the January 1 payment and they will receive it three days before.

Since December 29 is the previous business day, that is the day that the Administration has chosen. Despite the fact that this may be surprising for new SSI beneficiaries, others may be used to these payments before the due date.

Even if you believe that this will be the only surprise for SSI recipients, there is something else you may be interested to know. For example, you need to know that the amounts of the SSI payments will not be the same.

Social Security has announced the maximum SSI amounts

Not all SSI beneficiaries receive the same amount of money every month. While some recipients may qualify for the largest payment, others may get much less because they also have Social Security retirement benefits or SSDI.

The maximum amount an SSI beneficiary can receive on December 1, 2023, is $914 if you are single. Essential persons may get up to $458. Unless you are a married couple that is eligible, you will not qualify for up to $1,371.

Thanks to the COLA increase, there will be a 3.2% rise. Thus, if you are eligible for the largest SSI you will collect $943 on December 29. Getting 29 dollars extra per month may not be that much, but it will definitely come in handy.

Married couples who are both eligible may get up to $1,415. Essential persons may receive up to $472. Hence, Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries will be the first Americans to receive the Cost of Living Adjustment and in 2023. The rest of the beneficiaries will have to wait until January.
