There are numerous pathways for migrants to obtain a green card. Recently, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a new benefit for certain individuals seeking to apply for permanent residency.
According to the updated criteria, USCIS has specified that the immigration medical examination documentation for certain Afghan nationals who arrived in the United States during Operation Allies Welcome (OAW) will be valid indefinitely. This means they will not need to undergo the immigration medical examination again when applying for their green card.
Why has USCIS made this Green Card update?
This change is part of an update to the Policy Manual guidelines implemented by USCIS. The update has already taken effect indefinitely and applies to any Form I-485, which is the application to register permanent residence or adjust status. This applies to forms that are pending or submitted on or after November 13, 2024.
Eligibility Requirements for Afghan Migrants:
To be eligible for certain immigration benefits, Afghan migrants must complete a comprehensive immigration examination in the United States. This examination must be documented using Form I-693, which includes the immigration medical examination and vaccination record. This requirement is based on a decision by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Purpose of Medical Examinations for immigrants in the United States
According to the official CDC website, a medical examination is mandatory for all individuals outside the U.S. applying for an immigrant visa. This includes all refugees entering the country. These examinations are conducted by designated panel physicians selected by the Department of State (DOS).
