In September 2024, there was no SSI payment issued due to an adjustment in the Social Security Administration’s calendar. Normally, SSI payments are distributed on the first day of each month. However, when that date falls on a weekend or a holiday, as it did in September, the payments are moved to the nearest previous business day.
In this instance, September 1, 2024, fell on a Sunday. As a result, the payments were processed on Friday, August 30. This means that while there wasn’t technically a payment in September, beneficiaries had already received their funds in late August. It’s important to note that there was no reduction in the amount; the only change was in the timing of the deposit.
Other months impacted by calendar changes
This kind of adjustment isn’t limited to September. In fact, similar scheduling changes occur at other times throughout the year when weekends or holidays interfere with the typical payment schedule. One upcoming example will happen in December 2024. Just like in September, December 1 falls on a Sunday, so SSI payments will be issued on Friday, November 29.
Additionally, the first day of January 2025 is a holiday (New Year’s Day), so the January payments will be pushed up as well. They will be distributed on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. The new system, referred to as “iClaim expansion,” is aimed at speeding up a process that has long been criticized for being overly complex and time-consuming. In its initial phase, this update will be available to individuals who are single and have never been married, aged 18 to 65, and applying for both Social Security and SSI benefits simultaneously. The goal is to eventually roll out this system to all applicants.
