Did you know there’s a new proposal to standardize public parking fees across the capital of Mexico? This initiative aims to curb excessive parking costs. Finding a secure parking spot in the City of Mexico is notoriously challenging too.

Once you do find one, the hourly rates can be surprisingly high, varying significantly by area. Sometimes, you’re even required to pay for a full hour despite only exceeding the time limit by a few minutes.

A topic that has sparked much discussion is whether businesses should charge excessive fees for parking spaces. According to current legislation, businesses are required to provide parking spaces, which means they shouldn’t view them as an additional source of income.

The Issue of High Parking Fees

This situation becomes particularly problematic in shopping centers, where the high cost of parking is a common complaint. When people shop, dine at a restaurant, or watch a movie at a mall, they are indirectly paying for the parking fees. There is a growing suggestion that special consideration should be given to short-term users. Those who use the parking facilities for less than 15 minutes should not be subject to the same charges as long-term parkers.

Proposed Considerations for Parking Fees

Understanding Parking Fees at Walmart

Going to a supermarket like Walmart often means having to pay for at least an hour of parking, unless you manage to validate your ticket and save a few bucks. However, this isn’t always straightforward.

Specific Conditions at Commercial Plazas

In certain commercial plazas, such as Parque Tepeyec, the validation of a parking ticket with a Walmart purchase is contingent on a minimum purchase of 185 pesos, more than 8 dollars. This means your shopping needs to meet this threshold to avail of the parking benefits.

Moreover, it’s important to note that the parking validation applies only to product purchases and does not cover service payments.

Legislative Efforts for Fair Parking Fees

There have been ongoing efforts to address the issue of unifying parking costs. It’s worth mentioning that this isn’t the first attempt to legislate against excessive parking fees.

Back in December 2023, a proposal was introduced in the Chamber of Deputies aiming to exempt citizens from paying for parking in shopping centers, clinics, and private hospitals across the country. This initiative sought to amend Article 58 of the Federal Consumer Protection Law to achieve this goal.
