The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is sending a new reminder to a specific group of American citizens. This message will be really important if you are living and working outside the United States.
If you are in this situation, do not forget that you can only file your 2023 tax return until June 17. So, Monday 17, June 2024, is the last day to claim your tax refund. This deadline is for resident aliens abroad as well, so it is not just for U.S. citizens.
IS IT NECESSARY TO APPLY FOR THE JUNE 17 EXTENSION FROM THE IRS?
It will depend on your personal situation, but if you are a U.S. citizen, a resident alien living abroad, or are in the military on duty overseas, on the April 15 deadline, you are granted an automatic 2-month extension.
Therefore, there is no need to request a filing extension if you are in this situation. Although the most logical deadline would be June 15, it will be put off till June 17 because it falls on a Saturday.
Do not forget that other U.S. taxpayers living in certain areas may qualify for the October 7, 2024 deadline. It is important to check the IRS regular updates after important events take place in the country you are currently living.
