The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is celebrating the National Homeownership Month. To help American taxpayers who have just bought a new house, they want to send a reminder.
There are many things that can affect your 2023 tax return, for example when you get married, adopt a child or have a dependent. But having a new house is one of them too.
Notify the IRS
American taxpayers who have just bought a house in the USA should notify the Internal Revenue Service as soon as possible. In this way, you will avoid any unwanted and unpleasant delays.
Not being able to receive your tax refund on time can be something frustrating. Especially, if you rely on this money to be able to afford mortgage payments, medical expenses, or anything else.
However, you may not have notified the IRS your address has changed before. Do not worry because there is a simple way to make this address change to avoid tax refund payments delays.
This is how you can notify the IRS your address has changed
If you have not filed yet, you can simply use your new address when you file your 2023 tax return. Another possibility is to fill out a form. Depending on your situation, you may need one form or another.
It could be either Form 8822-B, Change of Address or Responsible Party/Business, or Form 8822, Change of Address. If you do not like forms, you can send the Internal Revenue Service a written statement. In your written statement you must include your SSN, EIN or ITIN, your full name, and the old and new address.
Do not forget to sign it. Call the IRS if you prefer to make this change by phone. Visit their official website to find out the number you will need to notify your new home address. https://www.irs.gov/help/let-us-help-you#IRSphonenumbers
