Retirees are looking forward to receiving their next Social Security payment because more and more recipients rely on retirement benefits. However, you cannot receive the next payment unless you qualify for it.
Social Security sets strict rules so only those who are eligible can receive this money monthly. The next payment for retirees in September will be delivered to recipients’ bank accounts on September 18.
Were you born before the 21st and after the 10th to get Social Security?
The Administration can only send money to eligible recipients who can say “yes” to answer the previous question. So, those born between the 11th and the 20th will receive their monthly payment on September 18, 2024.
Of course, if you are receiving Supplemental Security Income apart from retirement benefits, you qualify for the October 3 payment, but not for the one on September 18.
Those seniors who began collecting Social Security before May 1997 cannot receive the September 18 payment either. When it comes to amounts, retirees can receive about $1,920 on average.
- retirement benefit payment on September 18 (born 11-20)
- retirement benefit payment on September 25 (born 21-31)
- retirement benefit payment on October 3 (on benefits for over 27 years or on SSI too)
Social Security after Sep. 18 for retirees
Bear in mind that if your birthday is after the 20th, your payment in retirement will be due on September 25, 2024. As a matter of fact, it will be the last payday in September.
Some retirees may receive larger payments. For example, if you filed at 62 in 2024, you could receive up to $2,710. Filing at Full Retirement Age can provide you with a monthly payment worth $3,822.
If you were a high earner for 35 years in jobs covered by Social Security you could receive up to $4,873. This will be the largest payment possible before the 2025 COLA increase comes in January. SNAP recipients will get the COLA in October, but not retirees or SSI recipients.
