Thanks to the 2025 COLA increase millions of Americans will receive a 2.5% increase in 2025 from Social Security. Even if you will not receive this boost until January 2025, retirees can check the future amounts.
The Social Security Administration will soon send a notice to inform recipients of the new amounts after COLA. These notices will be issued in December, but retirees will also be able to check them on their my Social Security account.
2025 COLA for aged couples both receiving Social Security
As of January 2024, aged couples who were both receiving Social Security benefit payment got an estimated average check of about $3,014. This amount increased after the 2024 COLA increase, which was 3.2, slightly higher than in 2025.
Since the COLA for 2025 was unveiled on October 10, recipients can learn about the future amounts in 2025. After the cost-of-living adjustment, couples who are both receiving Social Security will collect about $3,089 on average.
If you and your spouse have worked for at least ten years and earned enough work credits, you can file for Social Security at the age of 62. Some spouses can get spousal benefits on the worker’s record.
When will retired couples get average payments of about $3,089 with 2025 COLA?
The Social Security Administration has confirmed that all retirement benefit payments with the Cost-of-Living Adjustment will be sent from January 3 onward.
If you are eligible for the January 3 payment:
- you started receiving Social Security before May 1997, or
- you are collecting simultaneously SSI payments from the Federal Government
- not eligible for the other retirement benefits in January
- did not break any SSA’s rules
Apart from the January 3 payment, retirees who do not qualify for the first check with COLA may qualify for one of the Wednesday payments. For example, there will be paydays on January 8, 15 or 22.

- retirement on January 15: eligible if born from 11-20
- retirement on January 22: eligible if born from 21-31
