Numismatics enthusiasts who have just joined the coin-collecting world may not know about the most expensive collection sold at an auction. In this case, it broke a Guinness World Record.
The thing is the first auction took place more than 40 years ago, back in 1982. So many of the coin collectors who have just taken up this great hobby may not know about this important event related to numismatics.
How much was the most expensive coin collection worth at auctions?
According to the Guinness World Record official website, it was sold for 44,900,000 US dollars. Therefore, it has been the most expensive coin collection ever sold at an auction.
It had to be sold at three different auctions. The first auction was held in 1982. The second one was 14 years later in 1996. After the second auction, there was a final one a year later in 1997.
This wonderful collection was known as the Eliasberg Collection. The place where they were sold was at Bowers and Merena Galleries in New Hampshire, USA.
Background of the Eliasberg Collection of Coins
A dream many numismatics lovers and collectors may have, but only a few can achieve. Louis E. Eliasberg Senior who was born in 1896 and died in 1976, started a collection that had an example of each and every major US coin variety.
In case you do not know anything about Louis E. Eliasberg Sr., he was a successful finance and banker in Baltimore. As you may have guessed from his background, he succeeded in his attempt.
No one had accomplished this deed before. This collection was from 1793 through the 1933 double eagle. Note, world records may occur daily, so if there is a recent event it may not be updated and there can be a more expensive collection.
