One more State has received the green light to deliver D-SNAP. In this case, it is Virginia and all its disaster areas affected by Hurricane Helene. This tropical storm has played havoc with Virginians’ plans.
Therefore, USDA needs to support all the families that need the money to buy food and avoid food insecurity. Bear in mind that there are about 22,858 households that USDA believes are eligible for this relief money to get groceries. In total, there are about 9 counties affected.
Who is eligible for D-SNAP? When is the deadline?
Although many Virginians do not qualify for Food Stamp benefits, they qualify for Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. Of course, there are specific criteria to qualify.
USDA has set qualifying disaster-related expenses and disaster income limits. Other States that have recently qualified for D-SNAP are Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia.
Those citizens living in affected areas in Virginia will have the possibility to receive in-person D-SNAP support to apply through November 22, 2024.
Which are the eligible counties in Virginia to get D-SNAP?
According to USDA, they are 9:
Wythe, Wise, Washington, Tazewell, Smyth, Scott, Grayson, Carroll, and Bland. Those who apply and are eligible will receive a month of benefits. In fact, it will be equal to the full amount for a SNAP household of their size.
Then, this D-SNAP money could be used to buy groceries in authorized grocery stores. A waiver has been set to allow eligible recipients to buy hot meals prepared to eat or hot meals to take away in eligible stores or restaurants.
Waivers have also been approved for the ten-day reporting requirement for food bought using Food Stamps which you have lost due to power outages. Remember that the hot foods waiver will be until December 10, 2024. Apply as soon as possible and do not miss out on this money.
