According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), they have received more than 80 million tax returns in 2024. However, there are many Americans who have not filed yet.
Still, the IRS has delivered approximately $169.411 billion so far. Even if it seems like a great deal of money, it is about 1.7% less than in the previous tax season in 2023.
IRS WARNS OF THE APPROACHING DEADLINE
April 15, 2024, is the due date to file a 2023 tax return in most cases. If you believe you do not have enough time to file before April 15, it is high time you applied for a filing extension.
The deadline to request a filing extension is also April 15. Unless you live in Maine and Massachusetts, that will be the last day to file your 2023 tax return.
For your information, Maine and Massachusetts have their due date on April 17. If you apply for a filing extension before the deadline and the IRS approves it, your due date could be October 15 (only for extension filers).
ARE THERE ANY OTHER DEADLINES SET BY THE IRS?
The Internal Revenue Service has published a list of all Federal declared disaster areas. If you live in one of these areas, you may also be eligible for additional time to file your 2023 tax return. Visit https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/tax-relief-in-disaster-situations for more details.
Do not forget that getting a filing extension does not mean getting more time to pay taxes. It is possible to get an extension as you make a payment. You could get it this way as long as you indicate the payment is for that purpose.
Thankfully, individual taxpayers can use the IRS Free File tool to get an extension. In this way, you can sort it out electronically and regardless of income.
