Great news if you are 65 years old and have a little income. In fact, it is possible to collect SNAP, SSI, and Social Security retirement or disability benefits at the same time. However, this could reduce the amount of your SSI or Food Stamps.
Once you turn 65 you can apply for Social Security if you have worked for a minimum of 10 years. That means you have earned at least 40 work credits. Each year, a worker can earn up to 4 work credits. The amount of earnings you need to get one work credit increases just like inflation does. For example, $1,730 in 2024 and $1,640 in 2023.
WHEN CAN I APPLY FOR SNAP IF I GET SOCIAL SECURITY?
As long as you meet the SNAP requirements, you can apply. So, it does not matter if you are on retirement benefits already or not. Bear in mind that you must meet income and work requirements in most cases.
Only U.S. citizens can apply for SNAP or eligible non-citizens. For your information, the household size may also affect your Food Stamp amount. Even if you have the same earnings as another recipient, if there are more people in your house, your benefit may be higher.
Those who already receive SSI may qualify easily for SNAP benefits. The reason why it may be easier it is because the Federal government has already checked the earnings, resources, and other income details.
