Social Security retirement, SSDI, and SSI average payments could increase or decrease. It will depend on the earnings SSI recipients have and the taxes workers paid to SSA in the past.
As of September 2024, the average payments for August are the following figures. The good news is that recipients get more money on average than in July, so it is great indeed.
SSDI, SSI, and Social Security average retirement checks
Retirement benefits have reached $1,920 for all retired workers. Spouses of retired workers can receive $909 on average and their children about $892. Retirees are getting $1 extra on average.
However, if you compare it to the retirement check for January, it has increased by 13 dollars. Bear in mind that the Social Security checks for January after the 2024 COLA were just $1,907. SSDI payments are much lower on average.
SSDI beneficiaries got about $1,489 in December 2023 and $1,539 in August 2024. But if compared to the January amounts, they have just gone up by 2 dollars. SSI recipients’ average check is worth $698. Although it has recently increased, it has previously gone down in the previous announcement by SSA.
